A dozen of the most exciting and unique writers for young people have chosen fairytales as starting points for their own original stories, in this surprising and spellbinding two-volume collection

Margo Lanagan (Tender Morsels), Rosie Borella, Isobelle Carmody, Richard Harland (Worldshaker), Margaret Mahy (The Seven Chinese Brothers), and Martine Murray (Henrietta There's No One Better) have taken inspiration from stories that have shaped us all, tales like "Beauty and the Beast," "The Steadfast Tin Soldier," and "The Snow Queen." This collection carries universal themes of envy and desire, deception and abandonment, courage and sacrifice. Characters are enchanted, they transgress, they yearn, they hunger, they hate, and, sometimes, they kill. Some of the stories inhabit a traditional fairytale world, while others are set in the distant future. Some are set in the present and some in an alternative present. The stories offer no prescription for living or moral advice and none belong in a nursery. Open the covers and submit to their enchantment.

About the Author:
Isobelle Carmody has had more than 30 books and many short stories published. Her books include several very popular series, such as The Legend of Little Fur and Obernewtyn Chronicles. Nan McNab is a writer and editor whose books include Body Bizarre Body Beautiful.
From Booklist:
Young-adult authors reimagine fairy tales in this collection that hews closely to the stories’ dark, folk themes. Here bad things happen, characters are complex, protagonists often find themselves in complicated situations, and endings are not always happy. The authors aren’t afraid to shy away from the hard topics. Margo Lanagan’s version of The Tinderbox explores such issues as class warfare, cruelty, and moral culpability, while Rosie Borella’s retelling of The Snow Queen focuses on meth addiction. Each story is followed by an afterword in which the author details his or her writing process, and these insight-filled notes will be of particular interest to aspiring young authors. The afterwords also are helpful in deciphering which fairy tale is being retold, particularly for those that are less well-known. An intriguing collection with potential appeal to a wide audience. Grades 9-12. --Eve Gaus
