The pick of the literary crop 2007 - The Sydney Morning Herald The best books of 2007 - The Independent Books of the year 2006 - The Guardian '.clearly and vividly written, funny and perceptive [the narrator is a] character so original and unusual, and yet so warmly human and recognisable.' Philip Pullman '. beautifully written, funny and endearing, and in its own quiet way, important.' Sue Townsend 'I loved the fresh and uninhibited honesty of Imran Ahmad's Unimagined.' Bruce Elder, The Sydney Morning Herald 'Hurrah for a memoir that isn't miserable! Hurray for Imran Ahmad's terrific sense of humour . an entertaining, moving and thoroughly thought-provoking tale of our times.' The Daily Mail 'Wonderfully evocative and strangely touching.' The Sunday Times 'A compelling quest for belonging .' The Guardian Part White Teeth, part Adrian Mole, Unimagined is the hilarious and captivating memoir of a Muslim boy born in Pakistan, who moves to London aged one and grows up torn between his Islamic identity and his desire to embrace the West. The endearing narrator recalls his childhood in a series of vivid shapshots: outrage as deserved victory is snatched away from him in the Karachi Bonnie Baby contest; bitterness as he is tricked out of his collection of Tarzan bubble-gum cards by junior con artists; the heady early taste of success in the Metropolitan Police schools quiz; uncertainty as he seeks to become a doctor (like all good Asian boys); bewilderment as he tries to learn about women at university; and shock at experiencing racism in its many forms. Imran's response is a determined quest to become the quintessential English gentleman: tie perfectly knotted, shirt pristinely ironed, hair neatly combed. He yearns to emulate his hero, Simon Templar of The Saint, by driving off into the distance in a Jaguar XJS to encounter danger, adventure - and a vivacious young woman (preferably brunette, but any kind considered). Deliciously funny and painfully insightful, Unimagined is truly a joy to read.
