“Everyday is Ashura, Every land is Karbala” The LAYLA JOURNAL is a literary journal put together by The Kawthar Project. Our third issue, the Companions of Karbala, explores the sacrifices of the companions of Imam Husayn (a), who serve as reminders that we have the potential to be the companions of our Imam (atfs). We may wonder whether we would have had the strength to be on the side of Imam Husayn (a). These companions stood by the Imam (a) even after the Imam (a) promised them paradise and allowed them to leave. Would we have made the same choice? This journal is the first in a series exploring the tragedy of Karbala and mourning ceremonies which remember the great sacrifice of Imam Husayn (a). Following the tragedy, the tradition of mourning was established by Lady Zaynab (s), the daughter of Imam Ali (a) and sister of Imam Husayn (a). This series will continue in the upcoming Muharram issues and will explore the tragedy of Karbala, its aftermath, and the importance of following the footsteps of Lady Zaynab (s). “Death with dignity is better than a life of humiliation.” Through heart wrenching poetry and gorgeous art, each artist in the LAYLA JOURNAL VOL. 3 continues the legacy of Lady Zainab by commemorating Imam Hussain’s stance against oppression. Our contributors are immensely talented and we are humbled to have their work in this issue: Fasiha Zehra, K. G. Ali, Khadija Naqvi, Laila Hasib, Laila Khan, Maham Syeda, Mahnoor Ahsan, Naimal Rizwan, Raahim Ali Zafar, Sawsan Mumen, Sayyid Haydar Jamal-Aldeen, Soghra Fatima, and Zahra Kanji! For any lover of Imam Husayn (a) or justice the LAYLA JOURNAL VOL. 3 is worth your time!
