"I found their characters, their MVP Kids, to be charming and the illustrations to be warm and inviting. They do a great job of representing the diversity of cultures, backgrounds, and appearances that we all experience. While at the same time embracing the many things that we share in common. I was impressed by the story lines and how they address topics significant to children and their parents, how they gently present opportunities for teaching and learning associated with each topic like meal time or bed time, how they naturally introduce to children things like special needs, adoption, ethnic diversity, and cultural differences and genuinely embrace the differences."
(Dr. Amy Baumann, Ed. D, an early childhood literacy specialist for 39 years)"The MVP Kids book list has heart and soul! Each title reflects the mission to mentor, teach life skills and inspire character in maturing children. MVP kids’ books are teaching important life skills through diverse, lovable characters, realistic plots and beautifully detailed illustrations. Children will make text to text, text to self and text to world connections as they move through the series. MVP Kids represents a global society where self-awareness, tolerance and kindness prevail.”
(Marla Conn, Reading/literacy specialist, Read-Ability Educational Consultant)My family loves books. We just can’t get enough. My favorite kinds of books are books that teach life lessons and social emotional strategies in the story. Why are social emotional strategies important to me? Research shows that only about 20% of job success is related to intellectual intelligence and approximately 80% of success is due to emotional intelligence. What is emotional intelligence? Emotional intelligence is defined as the capacity to be aware of, control, and express one’s emotions, and to handle interpersonal relationships judiciously and with empathy.
So, I was excited when I saw the REAL MVP kids and had the opportunity to look through the books. The first night we had the books, my daughter REFUSED to eat her dinner as there was broccoli on her plate. That night I picked out “Celebrate! Meal Time” at bedtime with my kids. She mentioned that she would eat everything on her plate tomorrow. My kids wanted to read EVERY book in the box immediately! I gave them the opportunity to look through the titles and my son is looking forward to reading, “Lucas Tames the Anger Dragon.” I am looking forward to the learn and discuss guide in the back! The learn and discuss guide includes information geared at gaining a deeper understanding of the topic and then also provides questions to discuss with your child. My daughter is most excited to read “Celebrate! The Way I’m Made.”
The books, some board books and some hard cover, are colorful and include characters of all races and ethnicities. Check out the excellent titles they have published and the ones coming at: https://realmvpkids.com/
(Tina Pratt, Cincinnati Family Magazine, Behavior Coach, Former PreK-5 Special Education Teacher)“The board books have such fun characters from many different nationalities. These children help children of all backgrounds identify with them. So many times, books focus on one nationality and children can’t associate their feelings with the kids. The end of the books has teaching tips for parents and teachers. The Celebrate books by Real MVP Kids appeal to children of all walks of life.
“ “The books are also written in a fun way to help children understand a way to work through every day problems or understand everyone’s differences. Celebrating Family and Life with the Real MVP Kids will help young children see everyday life in a new way.
“ “In the holidays books, the kids all show different ways they celebrate various holidays. These books give all children a glimpse into how others celebrate various holidays, even here in America. They also give young children background information about those holidays.
“ “At this young age, children may feel insecure or fearful of going to places like the doctor or dentist. This series of books will help them get through those tough times and make it easier to understand what might happen when they are there. It is nothing to be afraid of.
“ “All in all, these simple and fun board books will help young children understand the diversity of our world and prepare them for the life ahead of them.”
(Andrea Crawford, Reading Specialist, This Literacy Life)“Not only do I love the absolutely love the visual diversity on these pages, but they have even more to offer the reader:
“The people are realistically drawn (okay, their heads are a little large) and the scenes around them provide a ton of familiarity for littles.
“The rhyme is perfect for reading aloud. For example, Celebrate! Grandmas and Grandpas™ begins with a snuggles and tickles/homemade pickles set.
“Each book ends with two extras. One is a picture list of each kid featured in the book alongside their name. That way, kids can identify with the characters as they go through each book. The other extra is a list of ‘Helpful Teaching Tips’. Celebrate! Mommies and Daddies™ has a lovely one for separation anxiety: “Do not shame your child for feeling anxious about separation. Instead, reassure your child that you love him and will return.” How perfect is that?
“Each is it’s own cultural goldmine, filled with cultural identifiers, diverse vocabulary, and some even have multiple languages with pronunciation guides.
“So far, Lilah has really liked these at bedtime, but I think they would work really well for a family storytime. I highly recommend them to librarians and parents for the teaching tips alone. They would make a wonderful addition to a collection and I hope you will all check them out!”
(Julie Crabb, Librarian, Tools for the Tiny)“Real MVP Kids [is] dedicated to representing a wide range of ethnic and cultural diversity. Embracing others... means finding value in each other’s differences. Reading books with diverse characters teaches your kids to have empathy for all people. People with disabilities, different economic brackets, those not raised by their biological parents, etc., is an important lesson that parents can teach early on.”
(Diedre Anthony, Middle School Counselor, Thrifty Nifty Mommy)“Many authors and publishers include diversity in their books as if they’re checking off a box to fulfill a requirement. Sophia Day does something extraordinary. She helps us realize that diversity in character, family composition, abilities, interests, and backgrounds is the norm not the exception.”
