In this heartfelt favorites list. American political scientist Flynn (Defend Humane Ideals), who is based in New Zealand, waxes nostalgic about reading for pleasure, which, he's observed is a waning practice among his students. Originally from a poor Irish-American family ot self-educated book lovers, including his uncle Ed <> who read by torchlight on a naval ship during WWI - Flynn wants to guide readers through books that will expland their minds, educate as well as entertain, and ultimately lead to self-liberation. The fiction and nonfiction titles are seperated into broad categories, such as sciene and early civilization, American history, the human condition, and European history.
Jim Flynn is emeritus professor of politics at the University of Otago, an honorary doctor of science, recipient of a Gold Medal for distinguished career research, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand. He has been profiled in Scientific American for his research on human intelligence, and is the author of How to Defend Humane Ideals, What Is Intelligence?, and Where Have All the Liberals Gone?. He lives in Dunedin, New Zealand.
