Two offworld species, disturbingly human and alltogether alien. How do twenty-first century humans react when confronted with comparable intelligence residing in "their" solar system? Microbiologist Tandra Grey finds new hope for an ailing Earth and her own future when she makes first contact with alien neighors too intelligent, too nosy, and too near to ignore.
The first novel in Cary Neeper's Archives of Varok series, The View Beyond Earth is an update of Neeper's 1975 science fiction classic, A Place Beyond Man. The story reimagines the 21st Century Solar System as Tandra Grey, the elll Conn, and the varok Orram disentangle the alien from the familiar to reach the embattled human population, and each other. Their travels continue from Earth to the Oort Cloud, with several stops in-between, in Nautilus silver medalist The Webs of Varok and its sequel The Alien Effect.

From the Author:
By writing an entertaining story I have posed some very difficult challenges--many of them summarized in the Book Club Discussion section of the Archives of Varok website.

How can this story still be relevant after nearly 40 years? Haven't we learned anything? Of course we have, but we've also added a few blind spots--like overpopulation stress. We talked about it a lot in the 70's. Remember Paul Ehrlich's book The Population Bomb? Sure, the population experts have refined their estimates, and we've discovered how to feed more people. But we've also learned that technology can only help our situation if new tech items add to the efficiency of end products. It can't feed the 800 million who are hungry every day, nor solve the intense stress we feel in overcrowded situations.

There are lots of excellent nonfiction books being published about our current dilemmas. Most are very careful not to exaggerate. We need to pay careful attention to their good science. We live in an incredible time, when we are learning so very much about So Much--like gene regulation and exoplanets and Earth's gorgeous diversity (Take a look at some nature boards on Pinterest) and who we are, really. Don't let yourself be fooled by writing off the warning signs. You don't want to be part of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Enough already. I have to believe that we can make the difficult changes. Keep reading. My hope is that you can also find some light in the Archives' alternate solar system and be empowered by its realistic fiction.
