Effective Presentations grew out of a need to address a large basic course (130+) sections/semester at a large Midwestern university whose primary focus is on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The students in our population were struggling to relate to the course and text. We needed a book that engaged our students, their interests and their strengths. While we strongly believed it was necessary for the text to address the five cannons of rhetoric including: invention, arrangement, style, memory and delivery, it had to do so in a less conventional and more contemporary way. So, we took a three-pronged approach to making the book more accessible for our particular students.

About the Author:

Melanie Morgan (Ph.D., University of Kansas), is an associate professor of communication and the Director of Graduate Studies for the Brian Lamb School of Communication at Purdue University. She also directs COM 217: Science Communication and teaches courses in communication research methods, organizational communication, organizational communication consulting and intercultural communication. Dr. Morgan directed the basic public speaking course from 2001-2011. Dr. Morgan s research interests include communication and aging, aging and the workforce, and science communication. Her research has focused on the production of complex messages across wide range of contexts, including: aging, legal, organizational, and scientific contexts. Dr. Morgan is the co-author of several texts on communication skills, and her work has appeared in journals such as The Journal of Communication, Health Communication, and Communication Studies. Jane Natt received her master s degree in mass communication from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1999. In 2000 she joined the Purdue faculty as a clinical assistant professor in the Brian Lamb School of Communication. She is the former director of the introductory public speaking course that enrolls more than 5,000 students each year, and the co-author of the custom textbook Effective Presentations. She developed a communication lab to help students with their presentational speaking skills, and in 2012, the course was named a program of distinction by the National Communication Association. She is also the course supervisor for Writing for the Mass Media and teaches additional courses in social media and editing. In 2008, she and 17 Purdue students spent two months working for the official Beijing Olympic News Service. Prior to joining the faculty at Purdue in 2000, she spent 15 years as a reporter and editor with The Associated Press and a year as a public relations expert for the American Association of School Administrators in Washington, D.C. In 2015, Jane won an Outstanding Undergraduate Teacher award in the College of Liberal Arts.
