In the twenty-fifth year of the reign of Cyne Colfre, fifteen year-old Mereddyd-a-Lagan seeks to wield powers reserved, until now, for men. According to some, that rebellion makes her a sorceress. There is only one way to prove she is more: Mereddyd must go on Pilgrimage to the Western Sea, where a mysterious Being called the Meri will decide her fate. She will be the only female in one hundred years to attempt the journey, and she will remember, every step of the way, that the last young woman to challenge tradition never returned. Mereddyd faces her uncertain future torn between resolve and fear. Will she become Caraid-land’s first female Osraed, or will she die a heretic in the icy Western Sea like the one who went before her?

From the Publisher:
Included in Locus Magazine's "Best First Novel" and "Recommended Reading" lists.
From the Author:
THE MERI began life as a dream. Literally. I dreamed several of the key scenes of Mereddyd's quest and made the characters repeat them until I was sure they were locked into my sleeping brain. But as with any quest, the task of writing Meredydd's story required three things to fall into place (why is it always three things?). I had the beginnings of a story with a wizard (of sorts) and a wizard's apprentice (of sorts) but something was missing. The last two pieces were these: 1) the realization that my wizard's apprentice had to be female and 2) a line from a Robert Silverberg Gilgamesh novel.

Don't ask. It's complicated. What started out as a novelette I hoped to sell to Marion Zimmer Bradley, became first an 83,000 word novel, then a trilogy. (There's that three thing again!) I hope you will enjoy reading about Meredydd-a-Lagan and her quest to achieve what no woman has before.
