Looking back at his long and adventurous life, centenarian Milo Goodman recalls being a teenager alone in the world after the accidental death of his parents. With little more than a Model T to his name, Milo lands in Jarbridge, Nevada, recently the site of a gold rush, but now the mine is petering out, and the townsfolk are ready to lynch the mine owner. Milo trades his car for the mine owner's saloon and settles in as a saloon owner. There's a fling at prospecting, and there's eventually a wife, but mostly Milo resigns himself to serving shots and beers to a shifting mix of miners, tourists, and vagabonds. His story is underscored by a gallows humor and a knowing empathy for his fellow travelers. Like all good bartenders, Milo is a pleasure to know, and the carefully drawn characters who float in and out of his saloon are believable and outrageous, a tough combination for any author.
