Living in the shadow of the mighty Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, miles from the village, Ellie, Luke, and Blake exist in a world of spirits, mystical wolves, and stories told by their grandfather, the keeper of the lighthouse. In this five volume series, the three children of the Jennette family travel back in time to discover the origin of their ancestors and the events that shaped the civilization of Cape Hatteras Island. Throughout the series, Islanders live as they did when only an occasional mail boat kept them connected to the rest of the world before a bridge linked the island to the mainland, before tourists flocked to the area during the summer season, and before the government became involved in managing the land. Isolated from others, they created a life of comfort and community, one that is long lost. In each subsequent volume, the Lighthouse Kids meet the people and experience the events that gradually transformed Cape Hatteras Island to the popular resort area it is today.

About the Author:
Jeanette Gray Finnegan Jr. was born in what was, then, the weather bureau building, in the back room with one hospital bed, a local midwife, medicines, and multiple shortwave radios which could be used to contact the hospitals on the mainland. Her place of birth, Hatteras village, was the closest place for a plane to land should the patient need to be taken off (island speak for one too sick to be attended to by anyone without a medical degree ). She spent her childhood surrounded by an extended family of grandparents, uncles, and kin. During World War II, while her father and uncles fought in both the Atlantic and Pacific theaters she, her older brother, and her mother lived in the big room upstairs in her grandparents house. Jaye, as she is known, moved off island to attend high school and college, and taught secondary school for thirty-five years in the Virginia public school system before coming back to the island to live. She writes in the solitude of the third floor loft of her home, with views of both sound and sea. Surrounded by books borrowed, bought, downloaded, or checked out from various libraries she studied the written history of the island, and wove the tales in these books from fact, experience, and a grandmother s longing to convey the island s history to her grandchildren. The impact of growing up in this magical place, and her pride in the people of the island and their accomplishments, permeate the pages.
Review:

1. First time I have read about the Island as it used to be.

2. My son does not read, he read this, and begged for me to keep buying them. He cannot wait for the other ones.

3. My child is not a reader, but he loves these books, thank you.

4. This is the first and only book my child has read through, thank you, any more?

5. These books remind me of my childhood on the island.

6. I have lived here all my life and did not know any of this.

7. Now I know how all these places got their names. Typical of the people I know.

8. Makes me feel like a native, I'm giving them for Christmas.

9. Are you really from the Jennette family? I am too, and sure am proud.

10. Let me know the minute the next one is finished. Here is my name and address, and a blank check, send it to me when you finish.

11. I have all of them, thank you for giving me another reason to like this place.

12. I bet I could pass for a native after reading these books.

13. The Supervisor of English Teachers for the state of Virginia, requested a case to be used in summer workshop on writing narrative in a novel. When the session ended, the class was drawing to see which of them could take home a book. The others requested them, and they were given free copies.

14. After reading Croatoan, the Principal of the elementary school on the island requested copies (a case was given) to use in the classrooms teaching North Carolina History.
