And BEARDS OF OUR FOREFATHERS deserves our praise and then some.
This collection of online comic strips is filled with hilarity from the moment you crack open the cover to the very last second it takes for you to finish the last page. David Malki not only fills the book with funny comic strips, but layers the humor by tossing a little in each corner, a little at the bottom of the page, coming up with gag ads for products that are hinted at in the comic strips.
There s a diagram of different beards. Two copies of an ironic facial hair citation certificate given to people breaking beard laws. A made-up list of previous books by the author, which I would love to see actual print some day (such as CATALOGUE OF SEEPAGES, MOLES I HAVE SEEN, and WARTS OF YOUR MOM). And hidden, backwards affirmations and tips from the author telling you that "You can clean a computer keyboard in the dishwasher"...So much work has been put into this book to make it entertaining from inch first to inch last. -- Mark L. Miller --Ain't It Cool News
As insouciantly entertaining as his twice weekly Internet comics may be, there's something extra satisfying about reading (or re-reading) David Malki's "Wondermark" strips on good ol' pulpy paper. Perhaps the visually anachronistic nature of his cartoon work -- a collage of repurposed 19th century illustrations -- makes it best suited for bound paper. The new collection of Malki stripwork, "Beards of Our Forefathers", is certainly well-served by its packaging.
Malki's biggest jape -- using Edwardian imagery in the service of absurdist 21st century tomfoolery -- is nothing new, of course. Terry Gilliam was doing something very like it, after all, for Marty Feldman and Monty Python back in the 1960's. (There's even a Pythonesque "apology" joke embedded within the collection.) But when the initial connection between image and dialog could've only come from some strange synaptic leaps in the cartoonist's brain -- a strip featuring three young maidens in "poetic" dance poses is service of a fraudulent hangover cure, for instance ("I'm going to hurl all over your shoes in about three seconds," one promises) -- the results can still be potently risible. -- Bill Sherman --Blog Critics
...Somehow it all works; it all comes together into something magical. "Wondermark" is the place to go if you want to quickly bust a gut, or if you wish to wince a little while chuckling. In Malki's world, boxing bears woo fancy ladies, tradesmen sell fancily-named poo out of wheelbarrows to crotchety old men, gentlemen complain about the employment of quantum theory in plot lines, and men clean kelp from their squid children.
The human condition, in Malki's world, is just a bunch of stock characters preoccupied by their own warped interactions with each other. Nothing is beyond your own personal panel. Malki is a social critic extraordinaire..
Absurdity and irreverence are not enough to make a modern, adult-oriented comic strip, although so many lesser creators -- far too many -- tromp along with those twin weapons, never learning to use them with any panache. Not David Malki. I think with "Beards of Our Forefathers," a superstar might well have been born. Zippy the Pinhead beware. -- John E. Mitchell --North Adams Transcript
