The first unlicensed property in Dark Horse’s Omnibus reprints, the “Comic’s Greatest World” line of stories, was written in the early 1990s, when every new superhero book felt like a homage to Watchmen and Dark Knight (both 1986). This anthology, which collects two limited series, is no exception. The first 12 stories introduce a large cast by cleverly jumping to four distinct cities; the second 12 stories track the downfall of Titan, a psychologically dark, exceedingly short-tempered Superman model. Amid familiar comic-book types are glimpses of a few other intriguing figures, including Ghost, a vengeful, gun-toting female specter. Although not everything here bursts with originality, there’s plenty of fun and action in the nearly 500 hundred story pages, and as a self-contained superhero epic the book will appeal to both aficionados and those who don’t want a read burdened with a preexisting continuity.
