Fairhope: The book is a historical romantic novel (1848-1863) set in Texas on a large plantation near the mouth of the Brazos River. The heroine, Laura, is the adopted daughter of the Johnson Plantation's overseer. The hero is an Anglican clergyman, Michael, who comes to the plantation as tutor and pastor. Strong themes of oppressed slaves vs. wealthy landowners, as well as the issue of Texas as a confederate state, are interwoven in the book. The author describes the primitive beauty of the setting, but also the hot summers and even a hurricane. The story of the deep childhood friendship with John Allen Johnson, son of the Fairhope's owner, deteriorates, as the love and respect develops between Laura and Michael. The deep Christian faith of Laura, her mother Shelagh, and Michael give depth to the novel. Author Osborn owes much to Dr. Allen Andrew Platter's Doctoral Dissertation, Educational, Social, and Economic Characteristics of the Plantation Culture of Brazoria County, Texas and Elizabeth Silverthorne's book Plantation Life in Texas.
