About the Author:

Barbara Johansen Newman was a puppeteer, puppet maker, and fiber sculptor before turning to illustration and textile design. Her artwork has appeared in magazines, newspapers, and advertising, and she has illustrated over twenty children's books, including Tex and Sugar, which she also wrote. She and her family live outside Boston, and in her spare time she enjoys hunting online and in antique shops for vintage treasures, especially new additions to her collection of glamorous glasses. Once upon a time, wearing glasses was a stigma in school, but this story features young Bobbie, who wants glasses like her best friend and cousin, Joanie. While Joanie is displeased by the process of going shopping for glasses, the hundreds of styles dazzle Bobbie. There’s just one glitch: Bobbie doesn’t need glasses. So the girls try switching, with Bobbie wearing Joanie’s glasses and Joanie going without them—which, of course, leads to trouble. The ending is a solution, but also a concern: Bobbie finds a pair of glasses at a yard sale and now both girls are glamorous. Adults are likely to question whether the frames have clear or corrective lenses as the latter could be damaging to eyesight. That worry aside, the conventional and digital mixed-media illustrations are busily detailed with poufed hairdos, spiffy jewelry, and mod clothing, and the book is an overall fresh take on an oft-overlooked moment of growing up.
