Gay Spirit: Myth and Meaning broke new ground when it first appeared in 1987, giving voice to an entire generation of gay men seeking alternative visions about the fundamental questions facing their lives. This now classic volume has been widely hailed by the Lambda Book Report as among the 100 gay books that changed our lives.

This work helped shape a now international movement of spiritually aware gay men. In its deft weave of anthropology, history and sexual politics, Gay Spirit provides illuminating insight for all students of gender, queer and religious studies.

About the Author:
One of the premier names in modern gay culture, Mark Thompson was once the Cultural Editor of The Advocate. He currently resides in California with his long-time companion, Malcolm Boyd.
From Publishers Weekly:
Cultural editor of the Advocate, Thompson here collects previously published articles and book excerpts from the magazine, each an attempt to define the status of gay men. In an introduction he distinguishes between homosexual (a form of sexuality) and gay: "A social identity and consciousness actively chosen." The text discusses the gay's role in politics, religion, culture, identity. Among the contributors are Judy Grahn, author of lesbian/feminist works; Malcolm Boyd, activist Episcopal priest; Harry Hay, a founder of the Mattachine Society; and writer William S. Burroughs. Although the anthology will prove enlightening to nongays, they will be put off by Geoff Mains's "Urban Aboriginals and the Celebration of Leather Magic," an approving, detailed description of sadomasochism.
