One cool spring morning, Cooper and Robyn's mom comes up with a surprise treat for the two little girls who love to see new things: they are going to Mackinac Island for the day! When they arrive, they decide to go on a carriage ride to see the historic sites, like the old blacksmith shop, Surrey Hill Square, and the Grand Hotel with its rocking chairs. Along the way, the girls notice that there aren't any cars on the road. There are bicycle carts filled with luggage, carriages being pulled by large horses, and people walking and riding bicycles.

When they transfer to a bigger carriage pulled by three Belgian draft horses, they learn from the driver that the horses' names are John, Wayne, and Duke. That's not the only interesting thing about them, though: they are best friends and spend all their time together. Find out what happens one day when the carriage driver orders John, Wayne, and Duke to "Step up!"

Cathe Hahn is the owner of a sail-making company in Harbor Springs, Michigan. She was inspired to write this story after she took her two little girls on a carriage ride around Mackinac Island. She is a native of Michigan and this is her first book.

Bob Artley has worked as an illustrator for over fifty years. He began his career as an editorial cartoonist with the Des Moines Tribune and went on to work for the Worthington (Minn.) Daily Globe. Artley has illustrated more than ten books, including Once Upon A Farm, Christmas on the Farm, and Living with Pigs, all published by Pelican.

About the Author:

Bob Artley (1917-2011) was the celebrated illustrator of more than ten books. His career began more than fifty years ago as an editorial cartoonist. He spent most of his time with the Des Moines Tribune and the Worthington (Minnesota) Daily Globe. In retirement, he devoted most of his time to children’s books. He wrote and illustrated Once Upon a Farm, Memories of a Farm Kitchen, Christmas on the Farm, Living With Pigs, and Step Up!, also published by Pelican.
