From Library Journal:
In this popular, anecdotal brew, Hendrickson relates the incidents and personalities of the secession crisis of 1860-61. There is nothing new in interpretation or significant in information. The author repeats myths, provides engaging thumbnail sketches of the players without discrimination as to their importance, commits some errors in fact, and argues by innuendo. In Hendrickson's view, the South comes off badly (too eager), and the whole Sumter affair stands as a false prelude to a terrible war, for at Sumter honor and romantic notions of war played out to almost farcical levels. Hendrickson has a sprightly style and a lively sense of humor, but libraries with W.A. Swanberg's popular and still readable First Blood (1957) will not need this.
