An American officer aboard a British motor torpedo boat sees most of the crew killed by a German mine. Lt. James Harant (US Navy) recovers from a long swim at Glenstal Abbey, outside Galway, Ireland. While there, the abbot asks for his help to find a monk and a priceless artifact. A British admiral puts Harant with two leftenants, Bill Emery and Heather MacKay. Their mission is code named Dragonlair, a "training" exercise to Minnesota's iron mines to find the missing monk.
The artifact is a golden eagle covered with shiny gems, a ransom paid by the Ameer of Antioch during the 6th Crusade. It is an Eagle with upraised wings-a symbol of Nazi hegemony- and some believe it contains the Cup of Aramethia, known as the Holy Grail.
Of the three naval officers, only Lt. Harant knows their real mission is to help locate German spies on the East Coast. Trailed by thugs, almost killed by two assassins, Lt. Harant narrowly avoids falling into a trap laid by German Naval Intelligence.
Their mission failed. The Eagle of Christus remains hidden in Minnesota. Readers are invited to solve the very real puzzle of where Brother Godfrey Harris hid the Eagle.

Marty Duncan taught English and Journalism in Fairmont, Minnesota, before becoming a school superintendent in Amboy, then Howard Lake, then Olivia. His most recent posting was at Greenway, in northern Minnesota. The discovery of iron ore and the influx of immigrants into the Iron Range led to Duncan's first novel, Gold ...then Iron.
Through twenty-five years as a school administrator, Duncan accumulated a wealth of stories and insights into the internal politics, power, and prejudice at work within our public schools. He wrote Iron Lake Burning to tell the story of the state's longest teacher strike and as a salute to the men and ladies who make decisions that affect the lives of children.
"My intent was to write a classic romance using the Civil War in the background." That led to the trilogy, Black Powder, Gray Hope, in three books. Book One: Vengeance tells the story of an Irish lass captured and held as a hostage during the Dakota War of 1862. Book Two: A Civil War Romance continues the story of Patrick Harant and Kelsey O'Welin during the Civil War. Book Three: New Americans tells the story of Kelsey, Patrick, their children, and their new spouses.
Mr. Duncan received his Doctorate in Educational Administration in 2003 and serves on the St. Peter Board of Education. Marty is a Vietnam Era Veteran and a member of Lions and American Legion, and Marty and Carolynn live and work in southern Minnesota.
