KRISTIN NICHOLAS is the coauthor and illustrator of Knitting for Baby (STC). She is the former creative director of Classic Elite Yarns, and her crafts have been featured in many magazines and newspapers, including House and Garden, Country Home, and the Boston Globe.

JOHN GRUEN is a lifestyle photographer whose work has appeared in Martha Stewart Living, Country Home, Country Living, House & Garden, Food & Wine, and Parenting magazines. He lives in Connecticut with his wife and son.

Gr. 3-7. This splashy guide, crammed with photos of fashionably dressed crafters (including two boys), shows how "drawing with yarn" can add a funky personal touch to decor, clothes, and accessories. Nicholas opens with sample stitches on plastic mesh, then introduces more advanced, freestyle techniques; her own watercolor-and-ink diagrams make mastering even the whimsical "lazy daisy" a snap. Skill explanations are followed by a sophisticated-looking project, such as an attractive throw pillow. Patterns for enlarging conclude, but stitchers are also encouraged to design their own motifs.
