Mountain environments receive a superficial but visually arresting summation in this slim title from the Food for Life series. Contrary to what readers might expect, there is very little about the creation of mountains; rather, Riggs concentrates on the food chain of a mountainous landscape. This results in a structure that is sometimes jarring; for example, it may be unclear to some readers why certain animals are introduced out of nowhere and never referenced again (“The plant-eating pika is related to rabbits”). Thankfully, the big, glossy photos that are the publisher’s trademark are in full effect here, presenting crisp shots of foggy valleys, snowy peaks, glistening beetles, inquisitive martens, and more. The occasionally all-cap typeface, multicolored text, and borderless photos give the book the style of a newsmagazine, which will stretch the appeal to slightly older readers.
