The announcement, "It's a boy!" is welcomed by every new mother with excitement, thanks-giving -- and trepidation. It signifies the beginning of a great adventure, one that includes snakes, spiders, snails, bumps, scrapes, dirty hands, and muddy shoes. It is the beginning of what may be the most challenging job a human being could ever take on: raising a boy.
Something very amazing happens to a woman when she becomes the mother of a son. I have three daughters, and they are all mothers now. One of them has a son; and since his birth, I have witnessed in her an intense desire to figure out why males do what they do -- not to judge or compare him to the female of the species, but simply to understand why he's different.
If only every mother of a newborn baby boy realized how important she was! W. R. Wallace, a nineteenth-century poet, wrote, "The hand that rocks the cradle is the hand that rules the world." He was describing the power of influence. Mothers have tremendous influence; and according to leadership expert John Maxwell, that makes them leaders.1 Mothers are leaders because they literally influence generations. They can change the world -- for good or for bad. What makes the difference? Understanding. Understanding is the beginning of positive influence. A mother's desire to understand her son can equip her with the power to influence his life for good, thereby influencing his family, and his family's family, and all the generations to come.
Are you a mother who wants to understand her son? He may be two months old, or two years, or twelve, or twenty. It's never too early -- or too late -- to start the understanding process. Hopefully the next few chapters will open your eyes, your mind, and your heart to see your son in a new, more complete light. As you turn the page, remember: God made you this little boy's mom on purpose!
