The goal of this book is to guide you toward a variety of terrific activities for kids and adults, and to inspire your family to come up with your own ideas for Jewish fun.
Regardless of our level of observance, we all hope to connect our children with their Jewish heritage in a way that’s both engaging and meaningful to them, and that will strengthen our bond as a Jewish family. And while synagogue and Hebrew school are important, those elements alone do not complete the picture of Jewish life.
More than any outside influence (school, friends, media) as we grow up, our level of Jewish identity is determined by what we see going on inside our house. For example, having a Passover seder can either be a real drag or a dynamic, positive experience, depending on parents’ attitudes. And the way it’s conveyed will determine the way children view it for the rest of their lives.
We’re not saying parents should fake it for their kids’ sake. We’re saying: Lighten up, and have a little fun, because it’s just so easy to do. Families that understand this will not feel a need to seek out Jewish culture and observe customs only "because we have to," but will also find it natural and desirable to have a strong Jewish element in their lives.
Roll up your sleeves, put on your dancin’ shoes, and get out your thinking caps! We hope you have as much fun reading this book as we’ve had writing it!
