Marji Gold Vukson is an author of childrens' books including The Shapes of My Jewish Year.

An enthusiastic and devoted drawer since she was a child, Leslie Evans was raised in Michigan and later trained as a printmaker at the Rhode Island School of Design. She often brings her printer's aesthetic to her work as an artist and illustrator, producing many of the illustrations for her children's books in her letterpress studio. When time allows she enjoys developing her own projects including calendars, prints, books and broadsides under her imprint, the Sea Dog Press. She has illustrated many books including Leaf Jumpers, The Yummy Alphabet Book, and the Alphabet Acrostic series (Clarion). Leslie lives in Watertown, Massachusetts where she delights in her daily walks along the Charles river with her dog, Clyde.

They dig a hole, plant a seed, and then water and tend the young sapling. Years later they picnic in the shade, enjoy a bird's song, and taste the juicy apples the tree provides. At the end, the boy has grown up and has a grandson of his own with whom he can continue the tradition. Evan's bold woodcut-style illustrations are perfectly suited to this naturalistic story and in keeping with the holiday's tone. Varied perspectives, some from the top of the tree, help to showcase the tree's attributes and the pleasure it affords. A good choice for read-alouds about the celebration, this can also be used with books about Earth Day or Arbor Day celebrations to provide cultural comparison.
