In Fishing Basics, Arthur Cone explains with humor and authority everything you need to know to be a successful angler. He draws on his own experiences fishing around the world to introduce and explain every imaginable type of sport fishing: from fly fishing on rivers and streams to panfishing off a dock to pursuing big game fish on the open sea--and everything in between. Whether you're a seasoned surf caster who wants to try stream fishing or you're new to the sport altogether, you'll find an abundance of techniques, fishing wisdom and insider advice to help bring in a prize catch.
In each section, you'll learn which lures and hooks to use for which kind of fish, how to find the perfect fishing spot, the best times to fish and a handy check list of all the equipment you'll need for each type of fishing. Step-by-step diagrams show how to effectively tie all the knots you need and detailed instructions teach you how to clean and fillet your catch in plenty of time for dinner.
Thorough profiles detailing each species of sport fish cite personality traits and habits, where they're found, what they strike at and how they fight. As any experienced angler will tell you, you need to think like a fish to catch one.
Cone reveals the secrets of attracting fish with a wide variety of lures--from wet and dry flies to plugs, spoons, spinners and jigs to live bait. You'll find a multitude of special tips refined over Cone's years of fishing experience, designed to help you on your way to angling success.
In-depth chapters on fresh and salt water fly fishing clarify the complicated world of flies, lines and leaders, nymphs, currents, shadows and etiquette. A special chapter shows you how to target cast like a pro and bring in big fish on light tackle.
As author Arthur Cone wisely remarks, "Smart fish are more than a match for dumb fishermen." Whether fishing is your religion or just an occasional hobby, Cone's expert advice will give you the knowledge and confidence to excel at this wonderful sport.
Comprehensive yet succinct, authoritative and a pleasure to read, covering every popular species of sport fish found in North America and every conceivable category of fishing.
TWO EFFECTIVE WAYS OF USING A BOBBER
1. When fishing over weedbeds where the weeds come to within about four feet of the surface, you can drift along in a boat and use the bobber to keep your bait just over the weeds. By drifting you'll cover a good-sized piece of water, and on a breezy day this can be very effective.
2. Without a boat, simply keep working along the shoreline and casting your bobber into likely places. In other words, hunt the fish instead of waiting for them to come to you.
