We face an epidemic of disengagement in American high schools as our institutions fail to offer meaningful and relevant ways to connect curriculum with students' emerging life stories. These students do not see how schooling, as it is presently constituted, is important to their own developing identities. About the Author:

Michael L. Umphrey has been director of the Heritage Project for the Library of Congress and the Montana Historical Society, as well as a teacher, and high school principal. He is also the author of The Lit Window (1987) and The Breaking Edge (1988) as well as numerous articles.
