About the Author:

Patricia Barnes-Svarney has been a science writer for more than 20 years, has a master’s degree in geography/geomorphology, and has worked professionally as an oceanographer. She is the author or coauthor of more than 30 books, including the award-winning New York Public Library Science Desk Reference. Thomas E. Svarney is a scientist, a naturalist, and an artist. They are the coauthors of The Handy Geology Answer Book, The Handy Math Answer Book, and The Handy Ocean Answer Book. He is the author of Skies of Fury: Weather Weirdness around the World and The Oryx Guide to Natural History. They live in Endicott, New York.
