During that time, Philips served on the Board of Directors for Columbia Theological Society, working with President James McDowell Richards and his successor. He has also served as Moderator of the Atlanta Presbytery and the Synod of the Southeast, and on a variety of their boards and committees.
In 1975, Philips himself was appointed president of Columbia Theological Seminary. He retired in 1986 and has since served as president emeritus. Philips holds degrees from Hampden Sydney College and Columbia Theological Seminary, and a Ph.D. from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is also the recipient of two honorary doctor of divinity degrees.
He and his wife Katherine Wright Philips live in Decatur, Georgia.
