Roses are the most popular plant in North American gardens, yet many cold-climate gardeners have trouble overwintering roses than any other flower. Through a decade of trail and error at his nursey in Canada, Douglas Green has developed a totally new method of growing roses, one that guaranteed to revolutionize this popular hobby, making it a rewarding pleasure, not a frustrating chore. Where all previous rose guides have been based on methods developed by 18th- and 19th-century European gardeners, Green has discovered made-in-theNorth techniques that allow almost any rose to grow without hilling or winter protection of any kind. They blossom year after year, disease- and pest-free, without recourse to inorganic chemicals.

From Booklist:
Green has developed a method of growing roses in cold climates, the area north of USDA Zone 6, a line that runs through southern New York, Pennsylvania, and Ohio, and westward across the rest of the U.S. Proper planting is the key, Green explains, and he devotes a chapter to his deep-planting method. He discusses horticultural requirements, such as sun, soil, watering, fertilizing, and mulches. Other chapters cover the planting, care and feeding, and pruning of climbing roses, shrub roses, and roses grown in containers. A final chapter focuses on pests and diseases. This informative book has full-color photographs throughout. George Cohen
Review:
Grow roses almost anywhere with the help of a guide which uses new techniques which advocate growth without chemicals, winter protection or hilling. Green advocates a new 'deep planting method' for growers in harsh climates, supplementing his techniques for horticultural information and many other growing tips. -- Midwest Book Review
