Gr 4-8--In spite of the subtitle, these plays are more appropriate for older performers. That said, this collection of short scripts set in the American West from 1830 to 1900 will serve well for any school or youth group looking for entertaining pieces that can easily be performed with few props and simple sets and costumes. Additionally, the audience and performers will learn some interesting facts about historical events and attitudes. A foreword directed to adults offers suggestions for performing these plays, and a final note provides further ideas for costuming and creating sets. Each script is preceded by an informative introduction. All but one incorporate short songs (many of them familiar folk songs) for which music is provided. In addition to historical characters such as Annie Oakley and Bill Cody, there are Native Americans; Chinese, Irish, and German immigrants; and a host of animal roles. The tone of the selections is upbeat and light. All in all, this collection provides pleasant acting experiences for simple presentations or as part of more elaborate study units.
