Gr 3-6-The Caribbean island of Dominica (not to be confused with the Dominican Republic) is the setting for this series entry. Individual children are used primarily as hooks on which to hang bits of information: "Every day, [Carmen] sweeps her front yard with a broom made from the leaves of a coconut tree. Coconut trees grow everywhere on the island. Their leaves and fruit have many uses." And that's all we hear about Carmen. Charming, full-color photographs enliven the text, which does convey an impression of island life. A brief concluding section covers the island's British Commonwealth status, government, and money. Dominica is not well represented in series books about Caribbean island nations; even standard reference sources give it short mention. Where books on the Caribbean are in demand, this will be a useful title.-Pam Gosner, formerly at Maplewood Memorial Library, NJ
