About the Author:

John D. Long is the former Arthur M. Weimer Professor of the Kelley School of Business Administration at Indiana University. His undergraduate degree is from the University of Kentucky; his MBA from Harvard; and his doctorate from Indiana. His academic specialty is property-liability insurance. and for many years he was the Chair of Insurance at Indiana. He is a former president of the American Risk and Insurance Association and a veteran industry consultant and author. He is a former editor of Business Horizons, the bi-monthly journal of the Kelley School of Business. His interest in Christianity extends back to his childhood. He views Christianity as a "pearl of great price" to be shared with others. He invites believers and non-believers alike to study this book with the Bible close at hand for reference.

In the many conversations John Long and I have enjoyed over the years we usually have found ourselves on the same intellectual wave length. We share the same concepts of what constitutes good citizenship , and we feel the same apprehensions about the future of society. John's book reflects many of our shared values.

I have noticed that John is temperate about most of the intellectual subjects he approaches. Indeed, he is by nature intellectually cautious. Strangely, on the subject of Jesus Christ he is categorical.

Having read his manuscript with much interest and having talked with him at length about it, I cannot help but wonder: is he too narrow and too focused? Is he discounting too much the grand vistas of Christianity, its multiple dimensions, and its diverse splendors that speak in so many different ways to those who are willing to listen? Is he selling Christianity short? The Christianity with which I am familiar is more accommodating than his version seems to be.

For many years I have thought of myself as a Christian? Now I wonder: am I? Is Christ really the only way? Should I take as the gospel truth what John states [in Chapter 8] as "The Good News in a 'Nutshell' " ? Is he overly simplifying Christianity?

His book disturbs me. I need to take stock, reassess, and re-examine. How do I fit into all of this? Is Christ really my Savior? If John Long had not asked me to read his manuscript, I would still have been enjoying my own brand of Christianity instead of feeling uneasy about what I thought was settled long ago. -- Harvey C.
