From the Back Cover:
Contents Liturgical Translation: Some Reflections Gilbert Ostdiek Ostdiek addresses the nature of liturgical prayer from the experience of those who make up the worshiping assembly by examining prayer in its liturgical texts, the contexts of liturgical prayer, inculturation, and liturgical translation. Conceiving the Translating Task: The Roman Missal and the Vernacular Jeremy Driscoll Driscoll identifies the foremost principle for translators as being "conscious of and extremely sensitive to" the larger context in which the work was written. He applies this principle to the translation of the Roman Missal that centers on the concept of "mystery," outlines several specific problems in the 1997 proposed translation, and concludes with a reflection on the spiritual dimension of the translating task. Pastoral Issues in the Translation of Liturgical Texts Stanislaus Campbell Campbell notes that liturgical translations should (1) draw the faithful into the mystery of redemption; (2) narrate a story or elements of a story; (3) preserve metaphoric images; (4) incorporate inclusive language; (5) have depth and be repeatable over time; and (6) embrace the principle of "organic growth" advocated by the Second Vatican Council. Also includes an introduction describing the project's genesis; opening remarks from the forum by Archbishop Jerome G. Hanus and Bishop Joseph A. Fiorenza; and a summary and synthesis by Dennis D. McManus.
