When I visit schools, students often ask how long it takes to write a novel. The truth is, some come more easily than others. Most of "Retreat from Gettysburg" was written in the back seat of the car during a family trip from Wisconsin to the east coast and back. (This after a lot of research, of course!) Based on what I've heard from readers, this story has been one of my most successful. I hope that Chigger's story helps readers imagine a little-known chapter of Civil War history.

About the Author:

Kathleen Ernst is an author, social historian, and educator living near Madison, Wisconsin. Some of the information used to shape "Retreat from Gettysburg" was discovered while she wrote her first nonfiction book, "Too Afraid to Cry: Maryland Civilians and the Antietam Campaign." She has written four Civil War novels for White Mane Publishing, and two History Mysteries for Pleasant Company. She has also published articles in a number of magazines, including "Civil War Times Illustrated" and "America's Civil War."
