The state of our nation’s educational systems is a source for constant debate. While all seem to agree that overcrowding, underfunding and lack of sufficient resources are the major issues needing reform, few are able to offer viable solutions. As a result, more and more parents are breaking from tradition and taking a more direct, hands-on approach to their children’s education through the avenue of home schooling.

In his new work, "Home Schooling: Educating With the Head, Heart, and Hand," career educator J. Brian Higgins takes a look at home schooling and the issues associated with it. The reader is invited to share the experiences of the Waterson family, where an extensive case-study reveals the experiences and results of home schooling, as they are detailed by each member of the family, including the children. Through these interviews and additional interpretations, Higgins provides a thorough and thoughtful examination of the home schooling process, including the doubts and resistance faced by those who choose this route, as well as the unexpected rewards and benefits that come from "thinking outside the box." He includes discussions of such key topics as identity and how each family member involved must come to terms with their own, building relationships, the perception of "elitism" versus independence and choice, the pressures and elusive definitions of "the perfect teacher," an objective and hopeful critique of public education, and finally, the beauty of home schooling.

"Home Schooling: Educating With the Head, Heart, and Hand" is an objective and informative look at an alternative form of education, and it will prove insightful and helpful to anyone wanting to make this choice, or simply wishing to take a more active role in their child’s education.
