"If this book is successful, the child who reads it will grow to love the game of golf intensely. He'll enjoy it, not be afraid of it. She'll respect it, but not sanctify it. He'll know its simple pleasures....but be willing to learn its uncompromising rules. He'll grow with the game, learning to adjust his expectations to the demands of family and career, but always working to improve. She'll take the game with her on her travels and experience other cultures through the prism of golf. He'll teach the game to his children, share it with his friends, love passing on its lingo and tricks. In short, if this book is perfectly successful, the child who reads it will grow up to be John deGarmo." Bob Carney, Creative Director, "Golf Digest" companies (an excerpt from the foreword of "Hey Kids, Start Golf Right!")

Geared toward children and parents alike, "Hey Kids, Start Golf Right!" is an instructional book for teaching children how to get started with the basics of golf, including all facets of the game. The book is broken down into three sections: the first includes enough fundamentals of the swing to get the pupil to the first tee with some degree of confidence. The second section covers the etiquette of the game, an important, though often ignored aspect of golf that allows the player to enjoy the spirit and comradeship of the game. The third and final section covers the rules as provided by the United States Golf Association.

DeGarmo's research for this book included interviews with more than 150 high school and college golfers, as well as 101 teaching professionals. He has also included photographs of real students to illustrate clearly what he refers to in the text, in addition to sections for parents, golf jargon, and interesting jokes, stories and anecdotes.

DeGarmo does a service to the integrity of golf by providing this resource for today's youth, who are growing up during a period in which golf has certainly become more popular, though the average overall capabilities of its players has diminished. A must-read for every beginner to golf, "Hey Kids, Start Golf Right!" is not only a good learning tool, but also very motivational to the student.
