Ages 4-8. Jones' intriguing book probes the snow covering a winter meadow to reveal the activity going on beneath the surface. Cutaway paintings show the plants and tiny insects, larvae, mites, and spiders at the bottom of the food chain. These creatures, in turn, fuel the shrews, voles, and chipmunks that also winter beneath the snow. Foxes and weasels rely on their keen senses to detect the small creatures burrowing below the surface, as deer stretch to reach sparse buds and whatever bark they can find above the snow. By midwinter, deep beneath the snow, temperatures are warm, nests are dry, and with enough food, animals not only survive but also reproduce. The fluidly written text incorporates fascinating facts into concise, highly readable paragraphs, and italicized terms are defined both in context and in the glossary.
