The world of autograph collecting is enormous. In the three years since the publication of the last edition of this book, the popularity of this hobby and the multitude of available autographs have lead the authors to publish specialized subject guides to be used in conjunction with this general guide. The first is The Sanders Price Guide to Sports Autographs. Consequently, all sports-related names and prices were omitted from the general guide. In the same format as the previous editions, it is two books in one. The first half is a historical overview and introduction to the field, with valuable advice on attending auctions, handling dealers, various ways of acquiring autographs, and preservation. Additional information about manuscripts, collectors clubs, and a bibliography of related resources conclude the first half of the guide.
The second half is the actual price guide to signatures. International in scope, the listing is alphabetical by the person's name. Each name is accompanied by an identifying category (author, military, entertainment) and further identification (film star, Union general, humorous columnist). Values stated are for signature only, signed letter or document, signed handwritten letter, and signed photograph or art.
Although not touted as the definitive work on the topic, The Sanders Price Guide to Autographs ranks among the top works in this field. For the last three years it was selected as the best reference source of the year by the CompuServ Autograph Collectors Club. Libraries owning the previous editions will want to update their collections with this one. Libraries needing material on autograph collecting will want this excellent resource in their collections.
