As a Southerner, I have always been interested in matters such as history and legend and family and tradition. By some strange coincidence, my detective, Lizzie Stuart, shares my interests. Of course, she has some interests of her own (e.g., baseball and magic) that I am just beginning to learn about.
Like Lizzie, I'm an academic, a criminologist specializing in crime history and crime and popular culture. I teach at a state university. Death's Favorite Child is my first mystery. I'm at work on the second book in the series, set in Virginia. I'm also hard at work (with Donna Hale) on a non-fiction book, Blood on Her Hands, about women, death, and murder.
I'm a member of Mystery Writers of America and Sisters in Crime.
As for family -- relatives in Virginia and elsewhere. No husband and no dog. My mother still hopes I'll acquire the former. Since I once intended to be a veterinarian (when I enrolled at VA Tech), I'm looking forward to having a house with pets again.
Interests -- travel whenever I have the chance, old movies (High Noon is a favorite), cooking, working out to videos, collapsing on the sofa after working out. Books and more books.
I've managed to incorporate my love of crime fiction and films into my work as a criminologist. I'm the author of Edgar-nominated Out of the Woodpile: Black Characters in Crime and Detective Fiction., editor (with Donna Hale) of Popular Culture, Crime, and Justice. My most recent book (with Alice Green) is "Law Never Here": A Social History of African American Responses to Issues of Crime and Justice.
