About the Author:

Clare Hodgson Meeker is an award-winning author. She teaches writing workshops in elementary and middle schools throughout the Pacific Northwest and to adults at Richard Hugo House, a writers cooperative in Seattle, Washington. Born and raised in New York, she graduated with a B.A. in Music from Boston University and received a law degree from Hofstra University in 1980. She left the practice of law to raise two children and began writing books for children in 1993.

Beginning with a fictionalized (but scientifically accurate) account of Lootas's birth and early days, it describes the boating accident that left her frightened and injured in the chill waters of Uganik Bay, AK. Pulled from the water by the boaters, Lootas began a trek to the Seattle Aquarium, home of an award-winning sea otter breeding program. This absorbing record is accompanied by many small, crisp color photos showing the furry, demanding Lootas charming her way into her caregivers' hearts.
