I'll be honest; I had the opening of this book simmering for ages before I worked out a solution that not only added up, but effectively led into the rest of the story. Because I love the opening and didn't want to rush it. It's partly autobiographical, a distillation of memories of being alone in London on a freezing night with sleet in the rain. London is a major player in Magic, from the streets and houses that are so cozy on the inside and so alien and forbidding without, to the network of secret rivers that run beneath the streets (the culverted Fleet for instance) to the mighty Thames flowing between the tree-lined Embankment. Then another element came in. My Dad was a Bomber pilot in World War 11 and I've always been fascinated by early aircraft. Poking round a second-hand Manchester bookshop one day, I came across a discarded school prize, All About The Aircraft Of Today published in 1919. I was the first to read it - I had to slit the pages - and what I found was pure gold. There were detailed descriptions of Crossleys' long-vanished aircraft factory in Stockport, air routes, real and planned and plans for the Short Brothers' extraordinary new flying-boat. I simply had to get it into a book.There was a third element, too. I'd taken part in a stage magic show and the result - well, it alerted me to a certain sort of magic, and, as if by magic, I had the magic of the title.
