PreS-Gr 1-Two attractive offerings for emergent readers. Each double-page spread contains a clear, color photograph that corresponds to a single sentence on the facing page. Play Day shows children engaged in a variety of amusements with the long "A" sound. "Kate plays on skates" shows a girl decked out in full in-line skating gear. "James plays with games" portrays a youngster pondering his next chess move. In Jump! each and every sentence begins with "I just jump-." "I just jump in the lake." "I just jump all day long." However, the repeated use of the word "just" with a present-tense verb seems to reinforce an odd sentence structure. Word lists at the end of each title will be helpful for review. While displaying real children in plausible situations, these books are more inviting and simpler than the "Read around Alphabet Town" series (Children's). They will hold the interest of new readers, while developing their confidence. However, they will probably get more use in public libraries than in schools as these are the types of books that parents often request.-Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI
