PreS-Gr 2--Little Otter leaves his home expecting to slide into the water for fish, but it has snowed overnight and the river is frozen. He sees a crow who is having fun by sliding down a frozen mud slide--the bird is enjoying himself so much that he doesn't notice a fox sneaking up on him. Little Otter sees the fox, though, and gives a cry of warning, thus saving the crow in the nick of time. One good turn deserves another and the ingenious crow flies high with a large stone in his beak and then drops it on the ice, making a large fishing hole for Little Otter, and then another. Rowe's beautifully rendered watercolors present the palette of a woodland winter: clear, bright sunlight; stark whites and grays; and the occasional bright red berry. Young readers will enjoy this tale of friendship and ingenuity. The rich portrayal of nature brings to mind William and Lindsay George's Beaver at Long Pond (Greenwillow, 1988).
