About the Author:

Christine Brun-Abdelnour is a professional member of the American Society of Interior Designers and a practicing Certified Interior Designer in the state of California. A syndicated columnist for the Copley News Service, she writes a weekly column titled "Small Spaces" appearing in over 20 newspapers (see below). For nearly twenty years she has managed her own interior design firm, Christine Brun & Associates, located in La Jolla, CA.

Mirrors, light, and glass are unbeatable interior finish materials that create an illusion of space. Used with skill, mirrors can go almost unnoticed -while the atmosphere they create is appreciated. Care must be exercised to avoid reflecting ugly joints, utilitarian shelf brackets or unexpected revelations from neighboring areas. Mirrors can have a backing of plain silver, bronze, antique finish or smoke. Applications include the front of cabinetry; between counter surfaces and upper cabinets; wall to wall in bathrooms; or on a closet door. The doors in a narrow passage and the interior surfaces of bookcases can be sheathed in mirror to increase the illusion of space. Masking structural columns, chases for heating and plumbing, or other undesirable architectural features with mirror will not remove them from a room, but will certainly make them less noticeable.
