Synopsis

Poetry. Music. This new collection of lyric poems is divided into four parts. The first, At the Surprise Hotel, is a sequence set in an international hotel; each of the 19 episodes turns on a surprise. The surprises are emblematic of the various eccentricities of the denizens of this hotel, many recognizable. The second part is Events, where each narrative is a short fragment of a story. The third part, Encounters, contains love poems, primarily erotic. The final section, Departures presents variations on the theme of mortality. Each section of the book also contains performance poems and song lyrics, which were written with the intention to be read aloud; many have been recorded and performed with jazz collaboration.

About the Author:

Barry Wallenstein is the author of nine collections of poetry including AT THE SURPRISE HOTEL AND OTHER POEMS (The Ridgeway Press, 2016) and DRASTIC DISLOCATIONS: NEW AND SELECTED POEMS (NYQ Books, 2012). His poetry has appeared in over 100 journals, including Ploughshares, The Nation, Centennial Review, and American Poetry Review. His analytical text, Visions & Revisions: The Poets' Practice (T.Y. Crowell, 1971), was reissued in an expanded edition by Broadview Press (2002). Of special interest is his presentation of poetry readings in collaboration with jazz. He has made eight recordings of his poetry with music, the most recent being What Was, Was (Audioscope, 2015 LC 12366, Suisa). Barry is Emeritus Professor of Literature and Creative Writing at the City University of New York and an editor of the journal, American Book Review.
