From a region of spectacular beauty, gentle people, and deep spirituality come some of the world's most enchanting tales. This collection of tales, the only one of its kind currently available in the United States, introduces readers to the treasures of an ancient and rapidly changing culture. Selected and translated by Kavita Ram Shrestha of Nepal and edited by Sarah Lamstein, the 15 stories range in tone from the playful "King Silly and Minister Sloppy" to the haunting "Uttis Tree." The tales are supplemented by color photographs, line drawings, and an introduction to the history, geography, and culture of the country. A generous bibliography leads readers to further resources.

About the Author:
Sarah Lamstein was fortunate enough to spend two summers in Nepal and was captivated by the country - its spectacular beauty, its exoticism, and the gentleness of its people.  Sarah wanted to share this Himalayan kingdom with Western readers and decided to do it through the culture's folk literature. She collaborated on creating From the Mango Tree and Other Folktales from Nepal with Nepali writer Kavita Ram Shrestha, whose science books for children have won both national and UNICEF awards.
Review:
A fascinating glimpse at a fascinating culture through stories that are universal in their appeal and message.  -- The Second Story Review

Highly recommended.  -- The Book Report

Although the future seems uncertain, the spirit of Nepal and its people remains strong.  This book attempts to preserve that spirit, while at the same time, sharing it with readers from afar.  --Tale Trader

Nepalese stories are not easy to come by, and these tales are delightful and well-tellable. The attention to the background of the tales is commendable, and not often found in other collections of tales from various countries. -- Appleseed Quarterly
