Gr. 3-6. Fifth-grade supersleuth Cassie Williams becomes an accidental stowaway on a spaceship headed for Triminica after classmate Ben O'Brien refuses to leave the vehicle just before liftoff. Later she discovers that some of the ship's passengers (who are supposed to be friendly Triminicans) are actually Delphsviolent and greedy creatures who resemble owls. With the help of her alien friend Zekephlon and his family, Cassie and Ben finally manage to escape their tormentors, but not before experiencing some terrifying escapades. Although the characters are rather one-dimensional, Hess' sense of adventure is strong, and the superior technical capabilities of the extraterrestrials (materializing disks and tranquilizer weapons, for example) will enthrall young sf enthusiasts. A good choice for graduates of Greer and Ruddick's Jason and the Lizard Pirates series or for fans of Service's Stinker from Space books. Kay Weisman

Grade 3-5-Young space-opera fans will enjoy this third volume in the series. Fifth-grader Cassie and her best friend Zeke (an alien) are busy working on their science projects when they are contacted by a group of aliens who want to return to the planet Triminica with him and his parents. While Cassie boards the ship to say good-bye, Ben, the class bully, hides on the Triminicans' spaceship and refuses to leave. Then it is too late to get off, and soon they are all bound for outer space. They discover that the alien strangers are evil and are trying to hijack the ship. Fortunately, Zeke and his family manage a rescue and return the earthlings safely back home. The mystery element of the earlier entries is almost absent in this title, but it is a fast-paced, pleasant adventure with likable characters.
