Grade 5-8-Both of these books contain 19 full-color, full-page paintings, each one faced by a page of text that includes a small color detail of the work or a black-and-white reproduction of a related one. Roalf explains how the art was done, providing considerable technical information. Key words are printed in italics and defined in the glossaries. Sometimes the author employs formal analysis; occasionally she can't resist offering personal interpretations. The writing is clear and includes a few biographical statements about each artist to help readers place the art in some historical/geographical context. The reproductions are carefully printed and details and color relationships are easily perceivable. Also, an effort has been made to recognize the contributions of female, African-American, Chicano, Native-American, and Asian artists. A page of credits gives the date, location, and often the size of each piece. Most important, however, are the lucid explanations of the painting processes, information rarely found in books for young readers.
