SQL Server System Administration assumes that you are familiar with the fundamentals of database administration and have worked with SQL Server in some capacity. This book focuses on the topic of interest to most administrators: keeping data consistently available to users. Unlike other SQL Server books that are wide in scope, discuss SQL Server basics, and have little relevance to the serious SQL Server DBA, SQL Server System Administration provides a hands-on approach that administrators won't find elsewhere. For example, instead of dedicating pages to explaining queries and how they work, this book talks about choosing the correct replication topology and achieving high availability of information.

Review:
SQL Server is an integral part of Microsoft's BackOffice solution for integrating all your data processing needs. Microsoft SQL Server version 7 includes a number of new features, including a graphical query analyzer, redesigned query processor, full-text search, and Data Transformation Services (DTS).

SQL Server System Administration offers sound advice on standard database administration, as well as detailed information on the wide range of new features in SQL Server 7. Although installation is not explicitly discussed, the first section of the book covers setup troubleshooting and configuration, which traditionally have caused headaches for administrators. The remainder of the book covers topics as elemental as the form of data storage and as all-encompassing as the new SQL Agent. However, because of the massive number of changes to this new version of SQL Server, even fundamental information takes on great significance.

Users new to SQL Server administration will find that this book's real-world approach makes their experience infinitely easier. The authors point out typical pitfalls and how to avoid them. For experienced administrators, the in-depth treatment of new features will make the transition to SQL Server 7 much less painful then it might otherwise be, given that items as fundamental as a "device" are no longer part of SQL Server. --Rob Frankland
