Gr. 6-12. Part of the Immigrants in America series, these highly readable titles do an excellent job of discussing issues common to all new immigrants as well as the particular experiences of each ethnic group. The detailed histories cover the countries the immigrants came from, why they left, and their various journeys to America, where they settled, how they have adjusted, and the continuing challenges of blending old and new across generations. There are no simplistic categories; more than most immigration books, these titles show the diversity within each group and the range of individual experience, whether it's the various Cuban American responses to the Elian Gonzalez case or the differences among the Vietnamese Americans about the changing roles of women. The design is somewhat cramped, with two columns of type on each page, but occasional black-and-white photos and sidebars bring individuals up close, and everything is documented in chapter footnotes at the back; there's also an annotated bibliography of books, periodicals, and Internet sources. Grade 6-10-After giving historical background as to why the Vietnamese left their homeland, this lucid, well-organized text goes on to describe their departure, reception in the U.S., initial and continuing problems of assimilation, successes, and future outlook. First-person accounts, some in sidebars, expand and enliven the work. There are, however, numerous typographical errors, the worst being the use of dummy text for a picture caption, and a few factual errors: 2.6 million, not a half million, U.S. soldiers participated in the war; and it is unlikely that North Vietnam imported rice from California, given the U.S. trade embargo with that country. The dull format features double columns of text on each page and black-and-white photographs with an occasional fuzzy gray one. Despite its flaws, the volume updates Alexandra Bandon's Vietnamese Americans (New Discovery, 1994; o.p.) and provides useful report material.
