Gr 7-9-While hundreds of people have claimed to have had such an experience, there is still no irrefutable evidence to support their stories. Netzley systematically examines this phenomenon through the eyes of abductees, UFO researchers, psychologists, and skeptics. The well-documented case of Betty and Barney Hill is presented as the quintessential UFO abduction experience, exhibiting what have become classic elements: missing time, unexplained anxiety, memories recovered through hypnotism, visions of bug-eyed creatures, and a painful physical examination. Additional incidents bring out other common experiences like scooped-out gouges in the skin, memories of multiple abductions over time, odd objects found under the skin or in their noses, and contact with human-alien hybrid children. Various theories try to explain these encounters in terms of psychology or alternate realities in addition to hoaxes, dreams, and buried memories of childhood trauma. The theory that the abduction experience represents memories of the birth experience is illustrated with a photograph of a newborn boy being held up in front of his mother's stirrup-spread legs. Other black-and-white photographs show abductees, investigators, and theorists plus artistic depictions of typical human encounters with aliens. Although other books relate more accounts in detail and present some theories about them, few of them are as thorough in analyzing the phenomenon as this one.-Ann G.
